Education

Hancock holds his bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Maryland School of Law.

Jay Hancock is a Shareholder and Practice Leader of LBMC’s state and local tax practice.

Hancock has significant experience assisting taxpayers with all varieties of state and local tax issues, including multi-state tax minimization studies and reorganization strategies for public and private companies; analysis of state tax ramifications stemming from mergers, acquisitions and divestitures; identification of state tax credits and securing negotiated incentives; and management and resolution of state audits, appeals and ruling requests.

Hancock previously served as the Executive Director of EY’s Nashville-based Tennessee indirect tax practice. He has nearly 25 years of Tennessee state and local tax experience, the last 21 of which have been with national accounting firms in a tax consulting role.

Prior to entering public accounting, Hancock served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Tax Division of the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office, where he represented the Department of Revenue in state tax litigation and authored opinions on various state and local tax issues.
